React 17 + TypeScript Error: Can't find variable React

I have a library using React 17 and Typescript and it works when run in the iOS Simulator in the project. I can also successfully run npm build to build new version and npm publish to publish it to react-native-slide-modal.

However, when I import react-native-slide-modal into a fresh project, I get the error Can't find variable React.

I've tried the following:

• In tsconfig.json, I've changed react-native to react-jsx.
• I've installed react 17.0.1 and react-native 0.64.0 as devDependencies.
• I've installed react and react-native as peerDependencies.
• I've installed @types/react and @types/react-native as devDependencies.
• I've update typescript to 4.2.4.
